Sustainability of the Strengliner Mühle

In early 2013, the company installed a wood chip heating system to generate 100% of its own hot water and heat supply for the hotel with its 40 rooms, the restaurant, and two other buildings. The owners, the Molt family, describe their business sustainability strategy: “This is a decision that not only has a positive effect on our annual balance sheet, but should also be a trend-setting approach for how to live with nature in the country.” The raw materials for the required wood chips come mainly from regional forests and hedgerow landscapes.

Sustainability is also a priority in the kitchen and in all the hotel purchasing decisions: The Strengliner Mühle uses small kitchen appliances. Large combi steamers - with high stand-by consumption values - are replaced by smaller convection ovens where possible, which saves up to two thirds of energy costs when cooking small roasts. The hotel sources food from regional suppliers in the immediate vicinity; this boosts the regional economy and reduces harmful emissions through short transport routes. Organic or sustainably produced goods are used to a large extent, which is also reflected in the quality of the food.

Only ecological cleaning agents are used in the hotel area and room cleaning only takes place every 2 days to save water and cleaning agents. Guests receive extensive information about the reasons via an info flyer to constantly reinforce the ecological concept.

In the hotel area, the hotel rooms are furnished with solid wood furniture produced in-house. The wood radiates warmth and closeness to nature, which is the message the Strengliner Mühle aims to convey.

And the Molt family are also thinking of the future of their employees, most of whom have been with the company for many years. They therefore don’t offer contracts for seasonal employment - a decision that generally ensures a higher quality of service and more secure employment in the region.

The Strengliner Mühle was certified in 2020 and is entitled to bear the Greensign seal level 4, a sign of a transparent management of the various ecological, economic and social issues.
